About I3X-20?

This I3X challenge provides a collaborative space for research and innovation that advances understanding of Resilience, Restoration and Regeneration (R3).

The focus is on creating new knowledge and approaches around the competencies, capabilities, mechanisms and enablers needed to support transitions towards climate-positive futures.

Through cross-disciplinary and cross-sectoral collaboration in SMAR3TS, you can explore emerging research areas, that are relevant to the project, address conceptual, empirical and methodological challenges, and develop approaches that strengthen the foundations of R3 applicable to different contexts.

What are the desired outcomes of I3X-19?

These may include new empirical, conceptual or methodological insights, frameworks, practices and tools connected to R3, joint academic publications, collaborative research proposals, and new projects.

Where relevant, activities may also contribute to the development of R3 Framework (WP1) in SMAR3TS that can be applied to Work Packages (WP 2-5).

Key goals include building new skills, developing collaborations, facilitating knowledge transfer, and advancing research and innovation around R3 to drive lasting change.

What skills and capabilities would be beneficial for I3X-20?

The I3X takes a broad and inclusive approach, bringing together researchers and innovators from across the SMAR3TS consortium with diverse disciplinary, sectoral and professional backgrounds and at different career stages.

Relevant expertise may include knowledge and skills in one or several of the following areas, e.g.: sustainability transitions, resilience, restoration, regeneration, systems thinking, organizational and dynamic capabilities, innovation, digital technologies, futures and foresight, policy and governance, behavioral and social sciences, qualitative, quantitative or mixed research methods.

Perspective research and innovation activities conducted as part of a secondment could address challenges such as e.g: I3X-20?

  • How can Resilience, Restoration and Regeneration (R3) be conceptualized, operationalized and assessed across different contexts?

  • What competencies and capabilities are needed to enable R3 transitions?

  • What mechanisms and enabling conditions support transitions towards R3 across different contexts, levels and systems?

  • How can R3 capabilities, processes and outcomes be identified, assessed and measured?

  • What theoretical, methodological and practice-driven approaches and cases can strengthen the evidence about R3?

  • How can interdisciplinary and intersectoral perspectives contribute to the development and advancement of R3 practices?

  • How can foresight and scenario approaches help shape pathways towards climate-positive R3 futures?

  • What frameworks, methods and tools can support research, practice and policy, related to R3?
